Can Coconut Oil Remove Plaque?
Why is it Important to have Plaque Removed?
It does not only look unattractive, it is also a pre-step for an oral disease called Gingivitis.
Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums around the teeth. When do you know you have this inflammation?
Symptoms of Gingivitis are
- Swollen gums
- Bright red or purple gums
- Gums become tender or painful to the touch
- Bleeding gums or bleeding after brushing and/or flossing
- Bad breath or also halitosis
If Gingivitis will not be treated a new disease can evolve: Periodontitis. Dentists say, if it occurs, it is always preceded by gingivitis. In step 2 the tissue around the teeth will be destroyed accompanied by bone resorption. In an advanced stage the tooth will fall out.
How Do You Treat Gingivitis?
If it would be easy not so many people would suffer from it. There are many mouthwashes available that are trying to solve the issue. Of course you can get plaque removal every 6 months or, depending on the plaque building, even every 3 months.
But the most important point is the reduction of oral bacteria in the mouth that is causing plaque building.
Regular methods are scaling, root planing, curettage, mouth washes containing chlorhexidine or hydrogen peroxide, and flossing. Interdental brushes also help remove any causative agents.
While doing the research for this subject we found out that coconut oil is hardly ever mentioned as a treatment.
Surprised? Well, let’s go back to the original question:
Can Coconut Oil Remove Plaque?
OIL PULLING USING UNREFINED VIRGIN COCONUT OIL
Some call Coconut Oil Pulling a myth. Some call it not proven scientifically and some say, YES it works. We think that “How coconut oil pulling removes tartar and plaque on teeth” is NOT a myth, it is possible and has PROVEN results.
How is it possible, you may ask?
Yes, wee will explain in this article all the details about coconut oil pulling so you can make your own decision.
Oil pulling is in fact not a new method to keep up a healthy oral care. It is known and used in the Indian Ayurvedic medicine since centuries.
Ayurvedic medicine or abbreviated Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest holistic (whole-body) healing methods. It was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India. It’s based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. It contains concepts about herbal compounds, special diets and other health practices such as oil pulling, that are vital to maintain a holistic health.
So OIL PULLING, per the Ayurvedic medicine, is basically swishing coconut oil through your teeth and mouth for several minutes with organic unrefined virgin coconut oil and, for a great taste, it can be combined with Peppermint Oil.
You can think of it as an oily mouthwash but with far more powerful benefits!
The modern adaptation of oil pulling in Western nations such as the USA, has just began in the last 5-6 years.
Why is this Simple Method of Coconut Oil Pulling so Powerful?
- Whitens teeth naturally without the necessity to bleach them
- Keeps gums healthy
- Clears sinuses
- Helps with headaches and migraine
- Removes plaque and tartar from teeth
- Improves skin
- Reduces bad breath (Halitosis)
As you notice, the benefits of oil pulling are not small. It is known here in the USA since the 90s as a powerful method of detoxifying the body.
Coconut oil expert Dr. Bruce Fife, author of Oil Pulling Therapy, says “Oil pulling is one of the most remarkable methods of detoxification and healing I have ever experienced in my career as a naturo-pathic physician.”
Why is Coconut Oil Pulling Removing Tartar and Plaque?
The mouth is a place for many bacteria. One of them is the so called “Streptococcus Mutans” which is responsible for tooth decay and gum diseases.
Oil Pulling with coconut oil (not other oils!) is able to diminish the quantity of Streptococcus Mutans in the mouth.
You have to know that these bacteria create a “biofilm” on the teeth which becomes after some time plaque. And later on this is causing tooth decay and gum disease if not removed from the teeth regularly.
We are glad that oil pulling can help and it is more inexpensive than deep cleaning the the teeth.
STUDY ABOUT OIL PULLING WITH COCONUT OIL
A study that we found in the Nigerian Medical Journal from 2015 tested coconut oil on 60 boys and girls, age group 16-18, and everyone had symptoms of plaque induced gingivitis.
Oil pulling was done for 30 days as part of the daily oral care routine.
Plaque and gingival indices of the subjects were assessed at baseline days 1,7,15 and 30.
Results:
A statistically significant DECREASE in the plaque and gingival indices was noticed from day 7 and the scores continued to decrease during the period of the study.
How to Use Oil Pulling
1. If you use Cocopull™ packets (virgin organic unrefined coconut oil and organic peppermint oil) you use one packet daily.
Or use 1 table spoon of liquid coconut oil.
2. Swish the oil slowly in your mouth for at least 5-10 minutes at the beginning, then increase to 20 minutes. Make sure to swish it at least for 10 minutes. The oil should reach every part in your mouth.
3. Never swallow the oil! It is not intended to eat! When done swishing spit it out into trash. The oil becomes very thin and foamy when you swish.
4. Rinse your mouth with water.
5. Brush your teeth as usual.
Oil Pulling is a very inexpensive method that should become a part of your daily routine. So far we have received many positive testimonials about Cocopull.
